Poetry

At the Fishhouses

I write poems because, when I do it right, I figure out a little more about myself with each. And the poems I love to read are the ones in which the author discovered a part him or herself or of the world. Elizabeth Bishop said, "it seems to me it's the whole purpose of art…that rare feeling of control, of illumination—life is all right, for the time being." Bishop's poem, below, is my favorite poem in the entire world. It does what all poetry should do; what I try, and mostly fail, to do.
I know it's long--usually I don't like long poems--but it's worth reading. Enjoy. Apparently I can't figure out how to format a blog post, and all of the lines are running together. Sooo, click this link to get to the poem.
