hello, my name is machuca and I'm delighted to be joining the crack squad here at tête-à-tête. in keeping with the geographical origin of my name, here are some sick looks at the rich musical tapestry of south america. I tried to find mp3 links for all of the songs but unfortunately some only seem to exist in youtubelandia - whateva.



BOMBA ESTÉREO - electrocumbia - BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA
bomba estereo is a wild 4-piece electro group out of the colombian capital, bogotá. founded as a solo project of guitarist simón mejía back in 05, the band took on a female emcee, a drummer and another guitarist before producing 08's absolute banger record estalla. They've been getting some spins here in the states with their song fuego - i'll link that and some other choice cutz.

OS MUTANTES - psych-tropicalia - SÃO PAOLO, BRAZIL
os mutantes is an old brazilian psych-rock trio [founded in '66] that more people should know about. merging traditional brazilian tropicalia music with the psych-rock sounds and studio tricks of the acid age, os mutantes put down on wax some truly groundbreaking songs which have informed south american rock n roll for some 40 years.

MAKIZA - hip hop - SANITAGO, CHILE
makiza is the seminal chilean hip hop group. now defunct, the crew comprised two emcees [anita tijoux, seo2] a dj [squat] and another dude that did whatever other musical duties needed to be done [cenzi]. their late-ninties track la rosa de los vientos has been a favorite of mine since I was introduced to the group last year when I was in chile. ¡¡pura wena vibra estos cabros!!

MATANZA - electro-altiplanico - SANTIAGO, CHILE
so this is a group, kind of like bomba estereo, that takes traditional rhythms and melodic progressions and blows them up with electronic instrumentation that borders on the outrageous. though from the chilean capital of santiago, matanza's electro-bliss traces its origins to the high deserts of north-eastern chile and south-western bolivia and highland peru. I couldn't find too too much about these young chilenos on the internet, but I encourage you to cruise over to their soundcloud where they've posted a handful of bangers.

ALGODÓN EGIPCIO - samplepop - CARACAS, VENEZUELA
algodón egipcio is one venezuelan dude - ezekial "cheky" bertho - who makes creepy loop-based pop songs. more musically in step with the likes of indie-pop darlings el guincho and coconot, algodón egipcio has been making waves of late in the world of international music criticism. here's an original of his plus a dope remiz he did of dominant legs' clawing at the walls.
