I just happened to come across an Erykah Badu poster for an upcoming show in Dubai and was immediately struck by the integration of Middle Eastern culture and tradition into the poster design - the burqa, the ubiquitous date palm, the arabic script, the minaret (and Dubai's infamous landmarks: the Burj Kalifa and the Burj al Arab). I dig it. I suppose this isn't some novel idea but I never really gave much thought to concert poster in a global context (and I wanted share these sick designs with yallz). I searched for a few more Badu posters from shows around the world. Below are a few that stood out for their unique integration of motifs, symbols, and even political messages (i.e. Russia) that are representative of their distinctive cultures.
More posters from the artist, Emek, who designed the Israel, Nigeria, and Russia posters can be found here.
Here is a better collection of EMEK's designs. Really cool stuff on here. Some of it is for sale, sometimes...

Alright, I'm getting back to my thesis now but first- a correction. Emek also did the Dubai poster as well as the album art for New Amerykah part I AND II (which is just as good as the music itself).
ReplyDeleteHere's all the work he's done for Ms. Badu:
